Curators’ Introductions to Solo Exhibitions – Mary Rawlyk 1974

Frances K. Smith, curator, Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Queen’s University, Kingston, ON

It is appropriate that Mary Rawlyk’s first Solo Exhibition of prints should be held in Kingston, where all the prints have been made during 1972/74 and where the artist lives.

A year of post graduate study of printmaking at Brighton Polytechnic, Brighton, England, in 1971/72 only served to emphasize and encourage her interest in the infinite variations and combinations possible in printmaking techniques; but in techniques used as servants to ideas, not as masters.

A unifying stream of thought holds the series of prints in this exhibition together; the ideas and the techniques of their visualization as prints on paper, are the subject of Mary’s discussion which follows.
